20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne:
Science Fiction Inventions, Technology and Ideas

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a wonderful book. Written in the late 19th century, this book evokes a great love for the physical sciences on every page. At the time the book was written, all of the technologies and the devices in the book were brand-new. It is also a great adventure story. The story is told by Prof. Aronnax, who agrees to investigate a series of attacks on shipping vessels in the Atlantic Ocean. They find the sea monster that everyone thinks is responsible, but the sea monster turns out to be a submarine. Select an invention:

Diving Apparatus - scuba diving in the 19th century

Electrify the Rail - repel boarders!

Leyden Ball - grandfather of the taser
Device for hunting underwater; transfers a powerful electrical charge to the prey.

Nautilus - Captain Nemo's ride
The wondrous submarine of Captain Nemo; the instrument of his escape from humanity and his revenge upon it.

Undersea Mining
Conducting mining operations on the sea floor.
