"The "Tanks" Will Jenkens described in "A Logic Named Joe" were an extention of 1940s- early 1950s Mercury filled pipes that acted as accoustical shift registers for serial read/write dynamic memory.
A sound pulse was passed from one transducer to another through the mercury filled pipe, detected, amplified, and re-transmitted until the data was cancled (erased).
If the power goes out the memory forgets. "
