Comments on EATR - DARPA's Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot
Is a voracious autonomous robot able to feed itself and sustain free movement throughout all of eternity a really neat idea? DARPA thinks so - and so do I. (Read
the complete story)
| "And what kind of robotic arm should EATR have? I say, forget about clanky rectilinear arms; let's use snake arms, DARPA!

(Snake-Arm Robotics from OCRobotics)
And don't forget, you might want to have some little tiny arms for special tasks:

""Don't mind that large robot in your front yard; it's a DARPA robot trying to feed itself having (1) identified grass as a suitable biomass for conversion. Hopefully, it will ignore your small children and pets (1), and will not try to cut them into pieces small enough to eat (2) and then subsequently convert them in to electricity (3). "
OMFG!..LOL! I knew there's a reason I keep this site in my favorites.. :)
Keep up the great work!"

"Fascinating. Wasn't there some half-robot flesh eating thing in the book, Sword of Shannara? It survived long after the big war and lived in the forest by a destroyed city and waited for "food" to pass by. It survuved long after its' creator was gone."

"Thanks, MetalMINIMayhem. I try to present most items in a more 'objective' way, but I couldn't resist embellishing a bit on this one. A truly autonomous robot that can sustain itself indefinitely would be a big deal."

"Hi! I'm one of the engineers working on EATR, and we wanted to confirm what some of your other commentators have said: EATR is a vegetarian. We only have the ability to process plant material, and indeed, dead plants that have dried out (leaves, twigs, branches) will work best. You can think of EATR as more of a robot packhorse, grazing for fuel, than anything else. See http://mrrobot0.blogspot.com for more details"

"Thanks for writing - there is some good information on that link to your blog. Also, readers should note that I had already identified EATR as a vegetarian in a recent (18-Jul-2009) article - see EATR Robot Is A Vegetarian for details on the Cyclone engine that powers EATR."
