Michelin is introducing the Tweel - a combination of wheel and tire that could offer a number of benefits to owners of wheeled vehicles. Unlike most Michelin tires sold in the past century, the Tweel is unique - it does not use air to cushion the rid (Read

"I can remember a similar airless wheel built years ago in Sweden (Volvo? Saab?).
The spring medium was transverse U shaped fiberglass beams (imagine a U on it's side, bottom on the road, top on the wheel hub) designed to deflect evenly across the tread. Their appearance was similar to a multi spoked (say 20) wheel with a 0 aspect tire (Just a shear band with a tread).
It may have been on a show car but it was tested.
I think that I saw a report on it in a magazine about Materials Development or similar."
