Readers, I need your help! (Read the complete story)

"Wernher von Braun, inspired by journey to the moon, designed the Apollo rockets."

"I'll have to look it up, I seem to recall Carl Sagan mentioning in "Broca's Brain" that he was inspired by some sort of science fiction. How he was impacted by it, I'm not quite sure, so I'll try to get the exact passage. I also recall hearing that researchers at the University of Tokyo have been researching Active Camouflage, inspired by series such as "Ghost in the Shell". Alas, I can't recall were I read it. "

"I believe that on board Jacques Cousteau's research ship Calypso, the "bible" was Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea"
(Winchell Chung 2/15/2011 8:13:08 AM)
"Thanks! I'll check these out. keep going, readers!!"
(Bill Christensen 2/15/2011 12:08:40 PM)
"You may find it helpful to contact the folks at Singularity Hub (another popular futurist blog) and ask them to repost your question to their readers. You may also try /r/AskScience on Reddit."
(SenorZorro2000 2/16/2011 5:42:13 PM)
"Freeman Dyson said that the Dyson sphere was inspired by Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker. "
(Sandy Moltz 2/17/2011 7:54:07 AM)
"Carl Sagan - was that Edgar Rice Burroughs' books about Mars that he mentioned?"
(Michael O'Brien 2/18/2011 4:35:40 PM)
"A lot of SF authors are also high-achieving scientists. Presumably, they were, in turn, influenced by other authors. And so the circle turns."
(Peter Jacobs 2/23/2011 3:03:39 PM)
"The 1935 Gene Autry serial, "The Phantom Empire" had examples of "wireless telephones" & video surveillance & communication. Radio transmissions from Murania were encoded so as to be undetected by us surface dwellers. Robots were used on assembly lines. They had an example of a cruise missle with a "radium bomb" warhead. The missle was guided by an operator using a cylindrical map, e.g. terrain guidance. This was my earliest recollection of science fiction. From there it was "Destination Moon","Forbidden Planet", and all the other 50's movies. Chesley Bonestell's sci-fi illustrations gave vision to the birth of space flight, and expressed Dr. von Braun's concepts. So I became an Engineer."
(Jack Brown 2/23/2011 4:53:54 PM)
"Thanks for reminding me about that series; I think I watched it on DVD. I'll have to look at it more carefully for the details you mentioned. Thanks for sharing your story."
(Bill Christensen 2/24/2011 8:17:58 AM)
"Ought to have at least one good counter-example: Ursula LeGuin's father was a well-respected anthropologist. Most famous today for "Ishi - Last of His Tribe". A major influence on her sociologically oriented SF."
(Blue Monkey 10/22/2011 5:22:51 PM)
"I would love to have a transcript of your talk on this fascinating subject. It's a topic I have often pondered. david.r.pearce@hotmail.co.uk"
