Comments on Audio Bone-Conduction Headphones
Tired of headphones banging on your eardrums? Bang directly on your nerves through your skull instead. (Read
the complete story)
"I've been hearing about bone-conduction 'phones for years, but they have always failed to materialize as a viable option. Has this idea's time come? Cool."

"Since this thing completely bypasses the ear canal, it could make the perfect hearing aid."
(Robert 6/24/2006 7:31:00 AM) |
"Robert, that's a very good point. I think that bone-conduction hearing aids have been around for a number of years; maybe the real question is why it took so long to get them for hearing people. Which brings up another thing; bone-conduction hearing aids need to be held firmly against the skull - I'm wondering about that picture of the girl who appears to have the Audio Bone just resting on her ear.
A more extreme example (extreme in the sense used by the radical piercing crowd) is the BAHA - the bone-anchored hearing aid. This device makes use of an ‘abutment’, which is attached to a small titanium screw implanted in the skull just behind the ear. Sound is conducted through the bone rather than through the ear canal and middle ear as it would normally. Through the abutment, the BAHA is directly connected to the skull bone."

"Bone conduction has been used in military and tactical communications equipment for years. It allows better situational awareness by not occluding the ear, and reduces the chances of someone else hearing it by making it only "audible" to the wearer."

"That is just awsome. Wonder if they could tweak it for like games and stuff. With positional audio and crap like that? Who knows?"

"30 or more years ago, before the Walkman, I purchased a "Bonephone", a radio which was worn over the shoulders and had 2 speakers sitting on the collar bones. It was advertised, I think, in Scientific American magazine."

"If anyone has information on how these headphones can be purchased, please let me know. I lost the hearing on my left side two years ago, and I have the BAHA implant. However, i still have not been able to find a good headset system to use with my MP3 players, and I would love more than anything to be able to hear music in stereo again. If anyone has any additional info on this or similar products my e-mail is pikesl@slu.edu. Thanks."
