Australia Building Real 'Eureka' Tech City

A "brain city" like that of the TV series Eureka is being planned by the University of Queensland in Australia. A new township with room for 10,000 people in a green setting would hopefully attract up to 4500 elite scientists from around the world.

The current state of the UC brain city is shown in the picture below.

Lots of work to do.

Vice Chancellor Paul Greenfield yesterday said the university was seeking approval from the State Government and Brisbane City Council to have the site - formerly part of the School of Veterinary Science - included in the "urban footprint" to enable the township to proceed.

Professor Greenfield envisaged the town would be "green and open to the community", attracting top scientists.

From its humble beginnings 98 years ago, UQ has developed into a world leader in neuroscience, biotechnology, nanotechnology and mining engineering.

TV viewers in the US may be reminded of the town of Eureka, which first aired in the summer of 2006. The series features a high-tech community located somewhere in the Pacific Northwest; the town is inhabited entirely by brilliant scientists working for the US government on a variety of imaginative secret projects. Things go aft agley.
