The RedZone Solo robot is the first autonomous sewer inspection robot. It will be demonstrated at the WEFTEC in Orlando later this year.
(RedZone Solo sewer inspection robot)
The Solo is the industry's only autonomous inspection robot, designed to inspect 8-12" sewer pipe without supervision. Municipalities conduct pipe inspections so that they can understand where problems occur and plan preventative maintenance and repairs.
Solo greatly simplifies the challenges of inspection, and deployment of multiple robots by a single crew increases throughput by many multiples over conventional "CCTV" inspection. Unlike existing technologies, these small, portable robots do not require on-site trucks or generators, resulting in increased safety, significant emissions reductions, elimination of easement access challenges, and minimal public disruption. 360 degree lens coverage creates a virtual video that allows the entire inspection to be reviewed off-line as if the user is operating a camera in realtime.
The Solo autonomous sewer inspection robots are, perhaps, the remote ancestors of the duct-diving robotic Sentinels of the Matrix movies. In the movies, the Sentinels restlessly search the ductwork underlying the Matrix infrastructure, searching for unwanted elements skulking therein (Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, et al).

'Their only check on the growth and development of Vulcan 3 lay in two clues: the amount of rock thrown up to the surface... and the amount of the raw materials and tools and parts which the computer requested.'
