Heliodisplay M2i - Interactive Midair Touchscreen
IO2 Technology has done it again with their cool Heliodisplay M2i, a free-space projection system that puts images and text onto an invisible stream of transformed air.
(Heliodisplay M2i)
According to their press release, the Heliodisplay M2 is able to display high-resolution, full-color video with a screen area 87 percent larger than available on their first unit.
Even better, the M2i version provides "free-space tracking technology" to allow users to manipulate images with a finger or a hand directly applied to the display image. That brings the Heliodisplay into that "Minority Report-Style" display mode that we've been looking for since that movie came out in 2003. The M2i provides what amounts to a virtual touchscreen.
The Heliodisplay has been covered previously on Technovelgy; see Heliodisplay - Futuristic Display Technology for some additional technical details, as well as pictures from the science fiction movie that you are probably thinking about when you see this display.
I saw the original Heliodisplay at last year's NextFest; I'll bet the new screen size and image manipulation makes it an even more eye-catching display technology.
This display is very reminiscent of the solido projector that Frank Herbert wrote about in his 1965 novel Dune. That fictional device was used in conference rooms to project a display above a table; the IO2 Technology website notes that the Heliodisplay has been built into coffee tables as an embedded display device.
