Advertising-Funded Cellphone Content
The first advertiser-funded cellphone mobile content is now available on a trial basis in France, offered by Amobee Media systems and Orange France. Leading consumer brands, like Coke, Saab, Travelski, Société Générale and Mobifun are participating. The ads are served interstitially during idle time in between levels or while the game is loading.
Francois Clemenceau, Head of Sales and Business Development, FILAO, said: ‘‘The best price point for mobile games is an incredibly hot topic and the entire industry is looking for ways to increase the number of mobile users who download games. FILAO is extremely pleased to have been selected by Orange to integrate Amobee’s Media System into its games. This trial, which enables sponsored/subsidized versions of games, will generate valuable figures that will open the door to new revenue sources as well as business models for the distribution of mobile content. It will also offer a solution to price-sensitive users.”
If you can show ads to pay for games, why not have ads that will finance the phone call itself? That's what J.G. Ballard is predicting in The Subliminal Man, his 1963 story about modern life hijacked by capitalism.
Franklin waited impatiently as the five-second commercial break cut in (all telephone calls were free, the length of the commercial extending with range-for long-distance calls the ratio of commercial to conversation was as high as 10: 1, the participants desperately trying to get a word in edgeways to the interminable interruptions)...

Just last year, Virgin Mobile USA ran a trial to see if people would watch text message ads in exchange for receiving up to 75 free minutes of airtime.
