Your Can-Crushing Bionic Hand Is Ready, Steve Austin

An electromechanical bionic hand with can-crushing grip strength has been developed by a team of researchers from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. It appears to be the first prosthetic hand with sufficient strength to crush an empty beverage can.

The bionic hand weighs just 300 grams and yet has a grip strength of about 33 pounds; this is about half the grip strength of the average man. It is also quick, opening and closing in just one second.

The secret to the bionic hand's can-crushing grip strength is the system of pulleyed cables that run through the fingers and attach at the tips of the fingers.

The bionic hand can also pick up small objects with its thumb and forefinger, showing dexterity as well as strength.
