"Way of the Warrior: The Paradox of the Martial Arts by Howard Reid and Robert Croucher attests a "whip sword" made of a flexible, double-edged length of steel that shows up somewhere in India."

"this weapon is possible.have you ever played around with a metal tape measure.all you need is a device built into the handle to clamp it to the shallow u-shaped (cross section) at the base."

"I recently read an article in some handgun magazine about a sword that could be concealed in a belt. The edge/core of the blade was made from flexible steel. On each side, along the spine of the blade, were sections of steel connected together by a cable. When the cable was put under tension by a handbrake-like device in the grip, the sections locked together (much like Ivy's sword from Soul Calibur) and formed a stiffening rib. Regrettably I cannot find the article."

"This type of sword is old stuff in China. There is no need to have it straighten. The trick is to slash with it - not lunge forward. So when you slash sideways, the centripetal force will cause the sword to straighten. It is also well-known that a flexible sword will outwin a hard sword. Why? Because when a hard sword tries to block a swing from the soft sword, the user of the soft sword only has to twist his weapon 90 degrees, causing the hard sword to harmless be deflected bending - but not breaking - the soft sword. Once the hard sword passes, the soft sword will spring back and the user only has to rotate back 90 degrees. It is a beautiful science"

"It is not only Indian, there is also a Chinese variant. I own one, however since it is about 3 meters long it really isn't concealable as described. I am sure, however, that it would be possible to make a variant that would fit inside a normal belt-length leather sheath, and serve double-duty. The actual techniques to use the thing effectively, however, do require a lot of practice to perform without hurting yourself - I still can't reliably use mine and wouldn't dare sharpen it."

"there are belt weapons in the Chinese martial arts world which dated prior to 1999. Such weapons appear in the movies though whether it is a movie invention or an invention by a martial artist will require some investigation"

"i saw a documentry the other day with two indian men going thru a kata-like series of moves indeed the sword was about 3 meters in leangth and the blade was used as a slashing whiping weapon that needed INCREDABLE skill and timeing to use without dismembering yourself it was a joy to watch the grace and power of the warriors as they danced around each other slashing and whipping one mistake was all it would have needed to cripple either of those men WOW"

"There is some historical European precedent - I handled an old sword in Spain (maybe 18th century?), the blade of which was made up of many short segments - perfectly flexible in a belt. When drawn, the segments locked together to form a fairly stiff blade, certainly capable of thrusting."

"I currently have a patent on a stainless steel rail system that stores and deploys a 18 to 36 inch sword onto (not into) a belt. The stainless steel rail system protects you from the double edged razor sharp high carbon 1095 solid steel blade and acts as a controlled deploymen system. The sword may be 1 to 1.25 inches wide. A totally dull rounded edge blade will cut through thick plastic or tree branches due to the speed. The system may store up to 4 swords. Deployment is "lightening fast // razor sharp". The system will be available in the summer of 2007 at www.beltswords.com or razorrazor.com"
