Comments on Toshiba Micro Nuclear Reactor For Home Fission
Although I'm prepared to pull this story at any moment, it appears to be a real possibility. (Read the complete story)

"Hey Bill, I think the only thing you need to do is remove "Fusion" from the headline. If its a variant on that one for Alaska (did they ever build that?) it will be a fission plant. An interesting idea, but I'm guessing the NIMBY factor will be through the roof.
(Eric - you're right. Thanks for writing; sometimes I should just go to bed rather than write one more story! Errors, errors...)"
(Erik N. 12/18/2007 8:29:51 PM)
"This sounds like an extension, or just a re-naming of the "Rapid-L" nuclear reactor concept proposed in Japan for lunar colonies to be powered during the 14 day long lunar night when solar wouldn't be available."
(Andrew W. 12/19/2007 2:35:48 PM)
"To answer my own parenthetical question: The Town Council of Galena approved the power plant in 2004. Its scheduled to be operational by 2012 pending federal approval. The Town Council re-approves the plant every six months. (Ah, Wikipedia, what did I ever do without you?)"
(Erik N. 12/19/2007 10:07:13 PM)
"that would be cool, if it ever came to fruition.. however, that's a big "if" for one major reason..DOHS. I find it extremely unlikely given the current political climate that anything with any sort of nuclear capabilities on ANY scale would ever be made available to the public.. if by some reason it did, my god, I think I'd have to move to Antarctica.. ;)"
(MetalMINIMayhem 12/20/2007 6:12:00 AM)
"To Antarctica, heh? And what kind of power source you'd have to use over there? ;-)"
(Zubatov 12/22/2007 9:36:11 AM)
"This sounds very interesting. Any mention of cost anywhere? I hope this manages to survive the current anti-nuclear/technology hysteria that seems to be permeating our political systems. I'm amazed that Galena is able to go ahead with this, without the Sierra Club throwing a hissy fit. Have any of you looked into or read about pebble bed reactors? Another safe(r) form of reactor that uses helium as the heat transfer agent -- helium can't become irradiated, so in the event of a crack/leak, no radioactive gas or steam emission ... neat stuff!"
(Dave M. 12/25/2007 9:54:26 PM)
"Toshiba says this thing is a hoax. The picture accompanying this article around the internet is of their "4S" system (see Wikipedia), a 10MW reactor design."
(President Lindsay 12/27/2007 12:35:36 PM)
"zubatov - perhaps penguin poo.. :)"
(metalminimayhem 1/3/2008 2:47:39 PM)
"Its fake. Toshiba would not make images like that and such a way to harvest nuclear power have been researched and failed."
(Nicklas 1/8/2008 9:09:15 AM)
