Comments on Massive Balls In Fact And Fiction
For some reason, enormous (and, often, spinning) spheres form a kind of focal point for science fiction movies. I don't know why that is. (Read the complete story)

"Somehow I forgot to mention this example of the massive ball motif:

(The Death Star from Star Wars)

"
(Bill Christensen 6/24/2008 10:02:50 PM)

"There's also the Sphere from Michael Crichton's novel of the same name."
(Matt M. 6/25/2008 1:13:26 AM)
"Thanks - here's the picture.

(From the movie Sphere)

"
(Bill Christensen 6/25/2008 6:34:08 AM)

"Don't forget the weird surveillance and control Rovers from the prisoner. I believe there was just a story on these here. Or the lovable little aliens from Critters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critters_(film_series) They are small on their own but roll together into a massive ball to wreak havoc. Sentinel Spheres in Phantasm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_Man#Sentinel_Sphere OK, so thats fantasy/horror not sci-fi and its not massive, but cool - the sphere uses some actual brain matter for navigation and is equipped with sensory devices along with gruesome weapons Or "

"Thanks, Zac. Another one I forgot, that I should remember, since I wrote an article about the Rovers just three short years ago. See also the article on the real-life spherical Rotundus robot.

(The Rover seeks its prey)

"

"Don’t forget that the Greeks felt the sphere was natures perfection incarnate; its why we have cycles and epicycles describing motion through the sky in Classical times.. Examples of this perfection have been a part of human iconography for a long time and its no surprise to find it permeating through our dreams and art. "
