UK School Face Recognition: Kiddie Orwell Tech
Face recognition for sixth graders is the latest biometric technology in use at City of Ely Community College in the UK.
Principal Richard Barker said: "With this new registration technology, we are hoping to free up our teachers' time and allow them to spend it on what they are meant to be doing, which is teaching.
"As for the students, they love the idea of taking responsibility for their own registration and using Mission Impossible-style systems."
The technology scans faces with infra-red light and then matches their image with facial features stored on a secure system. Each student types in a PIN number, which probably helps speed the system along.
(School children face recogntion)
Although I'm sure there must be earlier examples, I was thinking about the automated sentry with face recognition from Greg Bear's 2003 novel Darwin's Children.
Update: Well, what do you know. In their 1931 novel Exiles of the Moon, the Golden Age team of Schachner and Zagat describe a selective electric eye.
But the selective beam of the electric eye refused to swing open the portal. Already the orders of the master of the house had barred the door against her. The actuating mechanism that should have operated by the imprint of her image on the telephoto cell, remained dead.
End update.
