Science fiction Grandmaster Robert Heinlein enjoyed a dramatic moment with his tumblebugs in his 1940 classic The Roads Must Roll. In the novel, roadways are giant conveyor belts that must be fine-tuned by engineers who use a combination stool-electric unicycle to get around:
