Galini 3D Printed Sleeping Pod Tiny Houses

I'm fascinated by the idea of a self-sufficient house, which I first read about in Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End.

I since discovered an earlier, and more detailed, literary exploration of this idea in Clifford Simak's 1952 story Ring Around the Sun:

"The houses are prefabricated units," said Crawford, "and they sell at the flat rate of five hundred dollars a room — set up. You can trade in your old home on them at a fantastic trade-in value and the credit terms are liberal — much more liberal, I might add, than any sane financing institution would ever countenance. They are heated and air conditioned by a solar plant that tops anything — you hear me, _anything_ — that we have today. There are many other features, but that gives you a rough idea....

"When you buy one of them, you don't need to tie up to an electric outlet...."

Take a look at a planned implementation of this cool idea, the Galini Sleeping Pods for Monterey, California.

(Galini sleeping pods)

The Galini Sleeping Pod builds on DFA’s experience envisioning one-off solutions for environmentally sensitive or challenged sites, in addition to its expertise integrating urban, architectural and interior design. The Galini Sleeping Pod is designed as a fully self-sustaining, zero impact structure. The 300-square-foot sleeping accommodation with shower, sink and toilet can be shipped to remote locations and placed in the landscape with very little impact on the site natural system. Four legs covering 13-square-feet in total suspend the pod off the ground allowing for plants and animals to not be displaced and exist beneath. Drawing its water supply from an atmospheric water generator and recycling all wastewater by means of organic filtration, the pod has no impact on the local environment and local water table. The electrical supply is generated through the combination of both wind and solar technology. Galini’s structure is 97% waste efficient in its construction through the use of 3D printed technology, consisting of a Carbon Fiber Infused Bio-Material that can be skinned in various materials according to needs. DFA has worked alongside Branch Technologies, out of Tennessee, to develop the 3D printing Structure.
