Not your mom's pretty lightshow laser system. (Read
the complete story)
"Reminds me of the arc-throwers that the Cobras use in the books by Timothy Zahn. Tho their arc-throwers are an open system, used as a weapon for taking out electronic equipment at range."
(Ashley 5/21/2007 6:58:41 PM) |
"From the gaming prospective, I'd say Tesla Coil or Obelisk of Light."
(Sabre Runner 5/22/2007 2:18:28 AM) |
"Ashley - I couldn't find a quote; maybe someone can find one. Here's a description I found - Their weaponry includes small lasers implanted in the little finger of each hand, an antiarmor laser that runs down the calf muscle of one leg and exits through a lens in the heel of their boot, plus an "arcthrower", capable of delivering a high-voltage pulse able to disrupt nearby electronics."
(Bill Christensen 5/22/2007 7:13:23 PM) |
"Sabre Runner - I found this pic and short description for the Obelisk of Light:
"In the First Tiberium War, Nod designed and fielded the Obelisks of Light, massive structures largely considered to be the most powerful conventional weapons used during the first two Tiberium wars. Seen as a symbol of Nod's strength and technological prowess, these were the pinnacle of the Brotherhood's projected-energy weapon systems, able to fire devastating laser beams at ground targets at long range."

"The Arc-Thrower consists of a set of capacitors in their chest cavity, which allowed a rapid cascade short through the ionized air path left after firing the finger lasers. If I remember right, the Arc-thrower could only discharge through the right hand. (the anti-armor laser was in the left leg)
Other equipment not listed earlier included:
2 different sonic weapons, one omni-directional, and one directional one. Both were capable of quite a bit of modulation, both for shattering objects (including electronic components and windows) and for stunning or causing nausea in living targets.
A self-destruct circuit built into the miniature fusion reactor used to power their equipment.
Auditory enhancers.
Optical enhancers including telescopic, infra-red range, ultra-violet range, and targeting features.
Ceramic laminae coatings for all of the major bones, and many of the minor ones to make them nearly unbreakable.
Servo-motors and joint reinforcement to augment strength and movement speed.
Also a pharmacopeia to provide stims and counter-drugs, and to try to keep poisons from working on them.
And the most important feature, the nano-computer that helps cordinate and interface with all the rest of the gear, and the programmed battle-reflexes in it, that allow training for ability (tho not experience) to be done in mere weaks, and can even take over the gear to protect its wearer.
PS:David Weber is also now writing about similar systems, tho with more current views of what may be possible, tho I don't think he does quite as good a job as Zahn at designing a cohesive setup. (he leaves more of it only hinted at, and not actually explained)"

"Now that I think about it, you might have done an article on this, instead: http://www.lightning.ece.ufl.edu/
Where I'm currently finding stuff about this is on Project Rho: http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/rocket3l.html#particlebeam
and the link it leads to: http://www2.cnrs.fr/en/195.htm"

"Oops, wrong place."
