| "Jonathan - I assumed that everyone knew that hearing by bone conduction is a relatively old idea. Bone conduction of sound was first described in the fourteenth century. Physicians in the mid-nineteenth century tested for degrees of deafness by holding a tuning fork to the mastoid process (the bump right behind and below your ear).
The unique thing that Heinlein did (as far as I know) was devise a wireless telephone (a cell phone) that provided no sound output, just vibration against bone. However, I don't know for sure if somebody designed or patented something similar before 1951. (Probably with a standard hardwired phone.) The first bone conduction hearing aids date from the 1930's, I think.
BTW, Flanagan didn't apply for a patent until 1958, if I'm doing my math correctly, which is 7 years after Heinlein published his book." |
| "In late 1993 or early 1994 I saw a device in use that worked in the opposite sense - it had an ear piece with a built-in microphone that picked up the user's speech through the bones of the skull. It was attached to a walkie-talkie in use by the mate of a mega-yacht who was guiding his skipper into a berth. I was fascinated by the device and asked him about it. He said it was great for working at sea because it reduced the wind noise from a normal microphone, and also left both hands free (it had a voice-activated transmitter).
