Collective Superintelligence Is At Hand!
Is it possible that humanity is on the threshold of the kind of swarm intelligence that bees and fish have - but with our higher cognitive function? Prepare for collective superintelligence!
This has been my focus as a computer scientist for over a decade, and I’m confident it will enable large human teams to amplify their collective intelligence, creativity, and productivity to unprecedented levels. In fact, I believe hyper-communication is a pathway to creating a “collective superintelligence” that performs at super-human levels while keeping humans in the loop — integrating not just our combined knowledge and expertise, but our values, morals, sensibilities, and interests.

This sounds pretty close to the idea of a hive mind, a phrase that was first used in The Face of the Deep, a 1942 story by Golden Age great science fiction writer Edmond Hamilton:
A similar concept is presented (along with a classic illustration!) in The Universe Wreckers, another Hamilton story from 1930:
These thirty Neptunians, it was apparent, were the supreme rulers, the highest council, of all the Neptunian race. And since it was necessary that they use all of their differing minds as one in directing the destinies of their strange race, they had in some way devised a mechanism for that purpose, which synthesized the intelligence, the minds, of the thirty into one single mind by means of that strange mechanism. So that it was literally as one mind that the thirty perceived and thought, when gathered here together, the central globe speaking out the synthesized thoughts and questions of all the thirty!
We should not be using AI to reduce groupwise human interactions. Instead, we should use AI to enable human teams to discuss, debate, and deliberate at scales we never thought possible. I am talking about inventing new forms of hyper-communication in which dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people can engage in productive conversations that efficiently converge on meaningful solutions.
