| "The TMS effect these researchers are aiming for is not to increase creativity, it might in fact decrease or interfere with creativity in some cases. The purpose is to temporarily convert a normal brain to one that is like that of an autistic idiot-savant. Savant's brains fail to take critical shortcuts when viewing or analyzing a complex pattern. Where a normal person 's brain blots out the details to get a better sense of the big picture, a savant sees all the infinite details. Hence the ability to draw something from memory after a brief glimpse, or spotting a spelling mistake by glimpsing a mistake. As for a SF reference, this is a lot like "focus" from Vinge's "Deepness in the sky", in fact, Vinge may have been inspired by early researchers in the field."
