Comments on Yoda - The World's Oldest Mouse Update
Yoda, the world's oldest mouse, lives at the UM Medical School. Not the best place for a mouse to attain longevity - but Yoda was born into a geriatrics lab. (Read the complete story)

"How was the mouse held in seclusion if it is with another mouse?"
(Dustin 4/14/2004 5:53:58 AM)
"Dustin - I was making a joke on the wording of the UM's press release - 'Yoda lives in quiet seclusion with his cage mate, Princess Leia, in a pathogen-free rest home for geriatric mice'. The idea is that Yoda is kept in a secluded, quiet, low-stress environment; this is very different from the typical medical animal lab, which is bedlam. Noisy, chaotic, smelly and not very conducive to long life."
(Bill Christensen 4/14/2004 10:05:12 AM)
"It is possible to extend life without calorie restriction but by skipping meals. Instead of the usual three meal day, just make it one meal a day. Or if you want to really extend long life just eat on alternate days. No calorie restriction, just the number meals are restricted. There is a study of an earthworm living several generations older by alternating its feeding and starving. It extended beyond calorie restriction. I notice families whose not too strict on eating but frequently skip meals age much slower than those who are fixated on a three meal day."

"This story could also be linked to 'Methuselahs Children' by Robert Heinlein, as it is the same method used by the Ira Howard Foundation."

"My little field mouse is over 3 years old now. Not sure how he has lasted this long. He's just a normal field mouse that I found in a trash can at work back in Feb of 2001. He was just a baby, all ears, eyes and feet. No special diet except that stuff you buy at the store."
(Nicole 6/17/2004 7:03:28 PM)
"I raise mice, and had one who lived to nearly three years. "

"the causes of aging is frustration and the vitamins to prevent it is honeybee and grape wine. i discover this in the bible "

"Who wants to live forever anyway?"
( 10/11/2005 4:26:23 PM)
"I don't know about forever, but I'd definitely like more time and in a healthy state."

"That's nothing. I caught "Woody" a house mouse in Vermont in 11/95 and had him until he died in 12/01. That's over 6 yrs old. He ran almost a mile in his wheel each night [rigged counter] & he liked Life cereal, white cake and of course, cheese. "

"i have a mouse found as a tiny tiny critter and raised it on replacement milk it sucked from a shoe string. its 6 1/2 yrs old. The mouse eats hamster seed mix and a tiny bit of fruits and veggies and hay. She's a cute little critter! "
(cheesey 6/24/2009 7:30:29 PM)
"I have a field mouse "Earl" that I have had since early 2002 (caught as a baby) and he is still alive today (7 years old). His brother "Earl" just died last week. The "Earl" that is left eats just about anything and everything (especialy chocolate covered cookies). I don't understand what was so special about a mouse living to be four, Earl is almost double that."
(Janet 7/23/2009 5:39:43 PM)
"My husband found a baby mouse at work one day and brought it home. We named him Gingles. We set him up in our garden tub, since it was deep and we never used it. This was in January of 2006. A couple months later a wild house mouse a little bigger than him fell into the tub, a female. She had 2 litters over the next year. The babies were given away as soon as they were eating on their own. Gingles died after 2 years, but we kept Mama. She is still living today. We have had her 5 years. She eats crackers, berries, and loves frosted mini wheats. She has gone blind, and is losing her fur, but she gets around ok alone in her tub. "
