Big Brother Wants To Sell You Something
It's bad enough that we allow the government to increase their already intrusive surveillance of us. Now, FieldAnalyst, a product of NEC, is going to look at your face as you walk through the mall, and tell merchants all about you.

The system is able to distinguish individuals and their faces; it then compares these images against its database. The system then outputs your approximate age and your sex.
In the picture shown above, the FieldAnalyst software has concluded that the guy with the little white square over his face is aged 30-39.
The system is intended to help merchants figure out their visitors and market to them better. Future versions will look at your clothes to decide what your net worth might be. Several malls in Japan already have this brand-new technology.
Update 15-Nov-2017: Science fiction movie-goers were treated to an advance look at this future in the movie version of Minority Report, screened in 2002. In the film, an iris-scanning device identified individual consumers passing advertising screens; each customer was given a personalized pitch.
