Palcohol Powdered Alcohol - Try Or Ban?
Palcohol is a US company seeking to launch powdered alcohol, featuring both rum and vodka varieties. However, some states, like Ohio, are seeking to ban it.
The main target of the bill is Palcohol which is freeze-dried alcohol. Mixing it with water creates a cocktail.
"Because it is in a powdered form, the material is different from other forms of alcohol because it could be made into highly concentrated forms or could be snorted by those interested in abusing the product," Buchy wrote in an email to The Enquirer.
"In Ohio, we spend billions of dollars to manage addiction related services, now is not the time to expand the availability of potentially harmful substances in Ohio."
The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved Palcohol earlier this year but later reversed that.
Palcohol is seeking approval from the bureau again. Alaska and South Carolina have already banned the sale of Palcohol. New York, Vermont and Minnesota are right behind with pending legislation to do the same.
Powdered alcohol was first patented in 1974, but science fiction fans got an earlier preview in The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge, a 1970 novel by Harry Harrison.

Ohio House Bill 594, introduced by Representatives Jim Buchy, R-Greenville, and Ronald Gerberry, D-Austintown, would prohibit the sale of powdered, or crystalline, alcohol in Ohio.
A few reluctant ones, myself and Otrov included, had concealed bottles which carried us a bit further, but even this ended when our lockers and bags were put into storage and we were issued pre-packed invasion kits. I had a small can of powdered alcohol disguised as tooth powder that I was saving for an emergency and the emergency instantly presented itself as the thought of the coming weeks without drink, so Otrov and I finished the tooth powder on B Day minus one and that was that.
