Can Musk Starship Astronauts Use Magnetic Boots?
Magnetic boots are a science fiction staple, so of course we science fiction fans hope they can be used. As far as I know, Golden Age writer Jack Williamson is the first to refer to magnetic boots in his 1933 story Salvage in Space:
In the following tweet, the skin of the Starship is described as being fabricated from austenic stainless steel, which is not ferromagnetic. But a reply gives us hope.
His "planet" was the smallest in the solar system, and the loneliest, Thad Allen was thinking, as he straightened wearily in the huge, bulging, inflated fabric of his Osprey space armor. Walking awkwardly in the magnetic boots that held him to the black mass of meteoric iron, he mounted a projection and stood motionless, staring moodily away through the vision panels of his bulky helmet into the dark mystery of the void.
You can if the magnetic field is moving or changing. Moving magnetic fields induce eddy currents in any metal, which have their own magnetic field. Autobelay devices in rock climbing gyms and that “magnet in a copper tube” experiment use the same effect.
