Denmark Joins The 'Zero Debris Charter' To Clean Up Space
Denmark has decided to join the international declaration "Zero Debris Charter", which aims to limit the amount of space debris. New goals and principles for sustainability in space are needed so that we do not risk losing critical technology, says the Minister of Education and Research.
- We need to show the same responsibility in space that we demand on Earth. That is why the sustainable and safe use of space is an important element of the strategy for space research and innovation that we launched in November. Obsolete and inactive equipment in space has long been a sore point for the many countries that send satellites into orbit. Most of us use satellites every single day – when we find our way or check the weather forecast. At the same time, satellites play a crucial role in Europe's security and provide us with knowledge that can, for example, be used for new green solutions. That is why it is crucial that we now join the "Zero Debris Charter".
In his 1978 novel The Fountains of Paradise, Arthur C. Clarke is not fooling around - he describes Operation Cleanup to make sure that low earth orbit is clear of debris for the newly constructed space elevator which is the main subject of the novel:
Fortunately, the old orbital forts were superbly equipped for this task. Their radars - designed to locate oncoming missles at extreme ranges with no advance warning - could easily pinpoint the debris of the early Space Age. Then their lasers vaporized the smaller satellites, while the larger ones were nudged into higher and harmless orbits.
