Spidery 'Walk Me' Toyota Autonomous Wheel Chair Like Star Wars
Toyota has unveiled ‘Walk Me’, a concept version of an autonomous wheelchair with foldable tentacle legs that can climb stairs and sit on the floor. Introduced in October, in the Japan Mobility Show 2025.
Fans of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace readily recognize the special spider robot chair used by Emperor Palpatine (apparently carrying his holographic likeness) while walking with Nute Gunray and cronies.

Update 17-Dec-2025:
A spider-bot swarm (they were also calling them sphere robots) is Team Italia's plan for lunar exploration in the 2009 Google X Prize competition (see Lunar Spider-Bot Swarm By Team Italia for more details.)
Their latest plan is to have disc-shaped spider-bots that fold up conveniently into a sort of "life saver" form, which can be stacked for efficient transport. They can then be dropped off one at a time across the lunar surface.

End update.
