Instant Journalists: Ordinary People With Cell Phones
Do reporters break stories anymore? Or are ordinary people with cell phone cameras and social media accounts doing the heavy lifting?
This radical shift, transforming ordinary citizens into the world's most immediate photojournalists, has democratized journalism, for better and for worse. It means we have access to footage that would have previously been unseen, but at the same time, we’re being flooded by content that is oftentimes emotionally charged but is also unverified.
We are living in a new era of history writing. The critical question isn't whether this is changing journalism, but whether this powerful, decentralized engine of information is ultimately a force we should embrace or deeply worry about.

David Brin’s vision in his 1990 novel Earth of empowered citizen journalists using everyday technology to document and influence world events has become strikingly real:
"But what can a single person do to influence events of such magnitude and momentum?" One answer might surprise you. We'll shortly hand over these channels, on loan, to the Federation of Amateur Observation Special Interest Groups...
It may surprise many of you how much science relies on amateur observers, from bird-watchers, to meteor counters, to hobbyists with private weather stations. But now, with so many weird phenomena taking place worldwide, these amateur networks are truly coming into their own. It's privatte citizens, with sharp eyes and ready cameras, who are even now tracing patterns the big boys think they can keep secret from us..
We'll show them whose planet this is!
