Doorways in the Sand by Roger Zelazny:
Science Fiction Inventions, Technology and Ideas

I admit it; I love this novel and I don't care who knows it (imagine sound of window breaking as rigid editorial standards are thrown out of it). This novel has a cool plot, a frozen uncle, undercover alien cops, acrophilia and a positively cosmic viewpoint of culture. All from the point of view of Fred Cassidy, eternal student. Select an invention:

Dog Suit - costumes for aliens that work
A disguise worn by an alien detective, allowing him to look just like a domestic canine.

Rhennius Machine - reverse yourself
Device of alien manufacture, which will reverse, or turn inside out, any object passed through its mobilator.

Star Stone (Speicus) - this is a recording
An artificial intelligence shaped like a rock, which can communicate with living organisms telepathically.
