"the term 'cookie cutter' is explained later in the novel - something about how there is a sort of geometric pattern from the different trails through tissue, and the overlapping shockwaves as the particles slow back down under the speed of sound. I'm not describing it well, but the end result is it looks like you just suddenly got an invisible cookie cutter cored through your skin simultaneously in a number of places.
