Comments on Unwanted Life Forms Abound In Sick Spacecraft
You don't want unauthorized life forms growing in the walls of your spacecraft - but there they are! (Read
the complete story)
"Here is a picture of the shape of the Moties from the novel cover:
(Motie seen in silhouette)
"
(Bill Christensen 5/13/2007 11:06:54 AM) |
"Of course, sometimes those microorganisms are too big to fit behind the walls...
(Captain Kirk confronts the enemy OUTSIDE the walls)
In The Immunity Syndrome, first broadcast in January, 1968, the Enterprise encounters what looks like a gigantic amoeba 18,000 km in length."
(Bill Christensen 5/13/2007 1:44:16 PM) |
"The creature in "Seven Million Miles to Earth," the inspiration for the "Alien" movie franchise."
(Ken 5/22/2007 9:27:40 AM) |
"I was thinking of the pesky lil' beach ball-tomatoe like alien from "Dark Star." Surely it must qualify."
(John McKnight 5/22/2007 11:10:02 AM) |
"Here's a quote from The Mote in God's Eye; the humans aboard a small ship discover that they are not alone.
"Cargill staired at the instrument board. Everything seemed normal. He hesitated in real fear before he opened the inspection hatch.
The lenses and focus rings were gone from Number 3 Battery. The space inside was alive with Brownies. Cargil jumped back in horror - and a thread of laser pulse splashed against his battle armor...""
(Bill Christensen 5/22/2007 7:03:07 PM) |
"Ken - I never saw that movie, but I looked it up. You never know when you bring that cute little lizard aboard your ship..."
(Bill Christensen 5/22/2007 7:07:21 PM) |
"did enjoyed read the text very much."
(JLT 5/23/2007 12:09:46 AM) |
"Back in the 60's I read Waystation by Simak. I still have it."
(H artson 5/23/2007 9:02:15 AM) |
"I've read and reread Way Station; it's still a terrific book. He even had some cool ideas - see my link page for Way Station. No unwanted aliens there; Simak believed in universal brotherhood."
(Bill Christensen 5/23/2007 10:48:26 AM) |
"Don't forget distinguished NASA scientist Geoffery Landis'novel MARS CROSSING, with its description of fungus decimating early Mars explorations. "
(Franklin Porath 5/23/2007 11:37:47 AM) |
"Franklin - thanks! Here's a quote from Mars Crossing (2001) by Geoffrey A. Landis:
"Shortly after launch, one of the crewmen complained of athlete's foot.
It spread among the crew, and by the time Agamemnon was approaching Mars, everybody had it. Normally, natural skin bacteria keep fungus in check, but zealous biological contamination protocols had killed the natural bacteria, leaving the fungus to multiply unchecked.
A spacecraft provides an ideal environment for fungus to grow: crowded with people in close contact, and war, and with the crew able to tqake only sponge baths.
Once they found that the fungus was beginning to eat their clothes, they took to placing their clothing in the airlocks to expose them to vacuum pressure for an hour every day.
...One of the crewmen opened up a panel behind oen of the navigation computerws and found rot growing on the circuit boards. A quick inspection showed the entire electronic system of the ship cultivating slime.""
(Bill Christensen 5/23/2007 2:34:54 PM) |
"Open the airlock space them all it's qick and will get most of them.Ultraviolet light in the air ducts and water supply might come in handy as well."
(Christopher Thomas 1/25/2009 11:19:31 PM) |
