Comments on Bach Organ Recital - On Mars
Sure, space probes have cameras, and that's great. But what about... microphones? (Read the complete story)

"Here's a nice page with more outer space sounds. Type-III Radio Bursts Produced by the Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, 2003, X17 and X28 Solar Flares as detected by the Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Science Instrument. Just click on the spectrograms at the page to play audio files for humans. This 'music' is also strongly reminiscent of the electronic music soundtrack from Forbidden Planet."
(Bill Christensen 11/12/2008 6:28:40 AM)
"In "The World", Dr. Tim Leighton, professor of acoustics at Southampton University, remarks "All of the space probes that have been launched to explore the solar system have been able to see with cameras ... but are deaf. They have not been equipped with microphones." ...not exactly. the Mars Phoenix explorer was equiped with microphones, but they were never turned on. Presumably this was to save power for the last few days, there may have also been other technical reasons they chose not to turn them on (perhaps NASA didn't want us to hear all those little green men laughin at us? LOL!)."

"MetalMINIMayhem, in poking around I've discovered that the Mars Polar Lander also had a microphone; that craft was lost. Apparently you can't hear robots scream, either. See Listening In: Lander to Record Mars Sounds and Sounds in Space: Silencing Misconceptions."
(Bill Christensen 11/12/2008 7:49:14 AM)
"In the radio interview Leighton actually said "Almost all of the space probes...". He has written articles about the microphones on the Mars Polar lander, the Russian Venera probes, and the Huygens probe which you can find in Google using Leighton+"Sounds in Space"."
