Comments on Kindle 2 Reads Aloud, As SF Writers Predicted
The idea of a mechanized 'book reader' or 'news reader' has been around for more than 100 years; take a look at the imaginative works of five sf writers. (Read the complete story)

"Quick lets convert all the books to electronic, just in time for a giant EMP which will usher in the next 1,000 years of Dark Ages. "
( 2/14/2009 11:35:39 AM)
"I agree - the virtues of the hard copy will not be appreciated until some sort of electronic catastrophe occurs. Another problem with electronic copies is the ease with which they are faked or changed."
(Bill Christensen 2/16/2009 11:50:53 AM)
"And for those of us with large collections of hardcopy, especially antique hardcopy, there's the issue of getting it all in electronic form. (tho that automatic book scanner you had an article on earlier could help) There's also the fact that nothing really compares to the feel and smell of a real, hardcopy, book. (we've got several thousand books in our house, including a whole shelf of old books, some of which are more than a hundred years old)"
(Ashley 2/21/2009 3:43:44 PM)
"Well, there's always the Navicloud Custom Debinder. On the other hand, I've got a load of books in my house; I can't give them up either."
(Bill Christensen 2/21/2009 7:48:34 PM)
"Maybe the members of the Author's Guild would be happier if your computer _sang_ the book to you with its Vocaloid Voice."
(Bill Christensen 2/26/2009 6:54:21 PM)
"Of course, Adams probably imagined his Guide reading its articles out loud to you because he originally wrote the Guide stories as RADIO PLAYS."
(the medium is the message 2/28/2009 4:06:04 AM)
"Mechanized book readers were widely used in all the Star Trek series. "
( 4/13/2009 6:45:14 PM)
"Thinking of the original series, I only recall antique books, not "new" books. However, I don't think anyone was shown reading anything. Watching video, yes."
(Bill Christensen 4/13/2009 7:20:11 PM)
