Comments on iPlant Brain Implant Advocated For Self-Improvement
If you could affect your own mood by simply pressing a button, would you use it? Would you use it to improve yourself? (Read the complete story)

"If the device can make you feel good, what's to stop you from pushing the button all the time, becoming addicted to the new device instead of what the device was trying to cure you from? Is there any references to something similar happening in any books?"
(The Cure becomes the Disease 6/8/2009 11:02:07 PM)
"The 'wireheads' of Niven's Known Space series are exactly that."
( 6/9/2009 2:50:28 AM)
"In terms of 'positively' changing behavior, in 'Ringworld Engineers' I think Louis Wu was able to resist the hardwired compulsion to eat tree-of-life root by virtue of having trained himself to put his 'droud' away daily and maintain his physical body during his years as a 'wirehead.' Not a precise analogy."

"Some seriously depressed people are 'resistant' to anti-depressant medication. It would be an interesting sci-fi premise if such people were also the only ones immune to some kind of totalitarian happy-face public mind control."
(why is everybody smiling 6/9/2009 4:21:58 AM)
"iPlant illustrates a classic problem: It's in an individual's interest to use such a device to cope with the life he is living. But it's a cop-out for society to put people in the position of having to do this. When people are PUTTING WIRES IN THEIR BRAINS in order to adapt to their environment, something is very broken."
(improve me some more please 6/9/2009 4:30:29 AM)
"I'D KILL EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM FOR A DROUD!!!"
(Luis Woo 6/9/2009 1:57:15 PM)
"@"improve me some more please": It's not necessarily just to cope. I would love to suddenly have the motivation to write a novel. Like you said, though, it would probably be used to help people deal with their crappy jobs but crappy jobs have been around for a long time. They're likely to be around forever, too, unless we can find some sustainable way to have robots do everything."
( 6/10/2009 4:32:12 PM)
"The problem is, the labor market will reach a new equilibrium where the jobs are even crappier and you HAVE to have an implant, both to cope with the new conditions and also to meet the new competitive standards. I mean, come on, we're talking about letting someone or something convince us to put WIRES IN OUR HEADS so we can better provide what it wants from us. Hey Bill, didn't the alien invaders do that to us in John Christopher's 'Tripod' books? It's dystopian and horrific if it's slimy aliens with tentacles doing this to us, but it's fine if it's just an impersonal, abstract marketplace doing the same thing?"
