Comments on Buying a Tablet Computer?
I think that tablet computers might just make it this time around. Here's why. (Read the complete story)

"I'm writing this on a Toshiba M7 which I have used for years. Its great, but a little heavy with short battery life. If the new Apple (or whatever) can be thin, light and have decent -- at least 8 hrs -- battery life, I'll get one to augment this. As long as it doesn't have any flavor of Windows. "

"The tablet computer concept will have to converge with the e-book, in price and other characteristics. So far they've all been way too expensive."

"For other early sci-fi references, I can't help remembering Capt. Kirk signing reports from various departments, i.e. that he'd read them or whatever, on some sort of pen-based electronic tablet device. That was probably as early as 1966, and on TV yet."

"TYY - I'm trying to remember if it was ever made explicit. It looked like Kirk was being handed a 'box' and a pen for signing. I'm not sure if I ever registered the idea of computer tablet as opposed to 'clipboard'. If we could find a film clip with more details..."

"I personally would have just one use for a tablet. It would sit on a table at home, and be used as the primary home network interface device. An inexpensive answer to the Windows Surface computer. If it's an Apple device, it would wirelessly connect to your wide screen TV, and using voice commands, I could do many home related tasks."

"Well there definitely were not stacks of paper hanging off those things. And the boxes had blinky lights on them. I mean really, what else could they have been? See http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/File:TOS_PADD_1.jpg and http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/File:TOS_PADD_2.jpg ... and recall in the episode where Kirk gets court-martialed, his lawyer is considered some kind of weirdo for keeping physical books made of wood pulp around, when everybody else in their society reads electronic versions of everything. Star Trek was pretty advanced on this subject, I think."

"Gateway C-140X. 14.1" Widescreen, Wacom sensitive digitizer, core 2 duo processor (released in 2007). That's what I am currently using to write this comment, and I'm sorry to say that the author did very little research on this subject. Tablet computers, especially convertible tablets (where you still have a keyboard, but the screen can flip 180 degrees and go into 'slate-mode') are still widely used today, and Apple's 10" iTouch will do little other than just being a 10" iTouch. Windows XP has its own TabletPC edition, and Vista and 7 both have built-in tablet input support (Excellent handwriting recognition and an on-screen keyboard) for tablet computers. Toshiba and IBM are two companies (there are many others) have been making convertible tablet computers for years now- The Thinkpad X series is very popular. These devices are untouchable when it comes to note-taking or drawing/art applications, and the stylus is a MUST for this sort of thing. On an unrelated note, I'm sorry you declined to purchase an Apple Newton back in the day, OP- That device was actually very good!"

"It seems that I had skipped over the fact that the OP had mentioned that Convertible Tablets existed, due to it being confined to one sentence of the entire article. The bottom line is: if you want a small reader, get a Kindle. If you want an MP3 player, buy an iPod touch or a ZuneHD. If you want an actual Tablet Computer that can do everything a current computer can do- AND MAYBE MORE?, you buy a convertible tablet. When the chips are down, you're going to miss not having that keyboard."

"If I ever went back to college, I'd want a tablet pc for taking notes. More convenient than a spiral notebook, cos I could edit my notes and rearrange stuff without having to rewrite them all. "
