Comments on Scanner Could Let You 'Rip' Books
If this device could be commercialized, you could 'rip' a book like you can rip a CD, digitizing its contents for easy storage on your computer. (Read
the complete story)
"Every time I read about the Navicloud Custom Debinder it strikes me as being incredibly inefficient.
First it destroys the entire book and mangles it into tiny fragments, then it attempts to capture all of those fragments from multiple points of view, then finally it has to reconstruct the information in the book from the thousands of images of the fragments.
It seems like such a waste of time for what is fundamentally a very simple process, as Nakashima and Watanabe demonstrate."

"I think that's why I like it. It's as if the ordinarily very rational Mr. Vinge had a very phildickian moment and created this extremely chaotic device right in the middle of his rational book."

"What if two pages were stuck together? : )
You'd wind up missing something.."

"That's true, and I thought about that. However, I remember friends giving me tape cassettes that had the beginning or ending missing on songs, or recordings from the radio that had DJs stepping on the songs, and so on. As the modern generation learned with homemade CDs and mashups, imperfection is part of the charm."

"And you could always add a little bit to the program to keep track of missing page numbers, and give you a list, so you could go back afterwards and scan them in individually."
