Comments on Polar Rose Face-Recognition Search Engine
Someday, the images on the web will be as searchable as the text. (Read the complete story)

"It occurs to me that this could be used to do things like identify the past lives of witness protection program participants. Are the ethics of it even under consideration?"
(Akaishi 10/6/2006 10:32:55 AM)
"Akaishi - that's a very interesting question. It could also be used by parents to try to find out what their children have been up to (and for kids to see where their friends have posted pictures on the Internet and so forth)."
(Bill Christensen 10/7/2006 5:47:15 AM)
"If you think about it, the world of pictures on the Internet is fairly private, in the sense that if your name does not appear in the associated text, the image cannot be found in a search engine index by using your name as the search text. This application could find missing children, for example. It could also identify people who do not want to be found, as Akaishi notes in the comment above."
(Bill 10/8/2006 8:21:45 PM)
"i,think its one of the most awesome things on the net..!! as of yet...wow..!!! thanks"
(carlton 10/9/2006 3:59:00 PM)
"I agree - I really think that this is an under-reported story that more people should be thinking about."
(Bill Christensen 10/9/2006 4:54:27 PM)
"great...just what til my mom finds out...and my husband...and boyfriend"
(internet whore 10/9/2006 10:49:47 PM)
"Imagine how the porn industry might use this. Maybe you could take a picture of a friend and find pictures of people who look similar, but are naked and having sex. Fantasies-r-us.com ...think that could minimize rapes?"
(Jeff 11/19/2006 9:12:12 AM)
"The way you minimize rapes is by castrating the rapist the first time. Regarding Polar Rose, this is one more way in which we are shrinking the world and eroding our privacy. "
( 12/19/2006 1:38:55 PM)
"Here's a nice rendition of the way that Polar Rose creates a 3D image from a 2D photo; this enables the software to recognize a person regardless of how they are pictured.

(2D to 3D translation aids face recognition)

"
(Bill Christensen 12/19/2006 8:36:03 PM)
"I have a really wild idea that maybe had not occurred to you guys. What if we just didn't post pictures of ourselves on the 'net that we would be embarrassed/scared/whatever of another person (ABSOLUTELY ANYONE) seeing? If you weren't practicing that before this software came along, you're a fool. Regarding the idea of "security by obscurity," you have your head very deeply in the sand if you think that someone of even average intelligence could not find as much information (available on the 'net or elsewhere) on you as he cared to find. Wake up. If you feel threatened by potential applications of this software, you have not exercised nearly enough caution in your life. This is very similar to the "don't trash your boss behind his back" principle. Whatever you say, no matter to whom, has the possibility of finding its way to your boss's ears. What then is the solution? How do we steer clear of something like this? We NEVER breathe a word of discontent, unless it is directly to the boss. Now that I've typed that, I can see that it's not exactly the same situation, but they're both situations where you've done somthing about which you don't want everyone on the planet to know. Cultivate and practice a little restraint and your peace-of-mind value will go way up, friends."
(Gabriel Huffman 12/22/2006 8:35:41 AM)
"Just another step in the cage we are building for ourselves."
( 8/3/2007 9:09:02 PM)
"Gabriel Huffman: What about the problem Akaishi mentioned: Witness protection programs or other people who for very good reasons cannot afford to be identified? Oftentimes, believe it or not, those people -aren't- criminals, but ordinary people who got stuck in really -bad- situations."
(John Penta 9/21/2007 6:05:43 PM)
"The witness protections is a valid point. As far as privacy goes, Gabriel hit the nail on the head. If your so concerned with privacy, why have pictures on the internet, a myspace/facebook page, or the like. If you want something private you keep it off the internet. Usually if your trying to hide something, it was either illegal/embarassing/bad. Don'tput yourself in that situation and you don't have anything to worry about. Now that I know about this program, I'm searching myself to reminisce about all the dumb things I have done in my life I'm not afraid to hide. :)"
