GHOST Robot Fire Fighters In London

GHOSTs (Gas cylinder Hazardous Operations Scientific and Technical support), special robotic fire-fighters were sent in to fight a dangerous fire at Membury Airfield yesterday morning. The defense and security company QintetiQ developed the robots, which are remotely controlled by real fire-fighters.

A factory at the Airfield contained tanks full of acetylene, a highly flammable material. Fire brigades from four different cities poured water on the factory to douse the fire.

The two remotely controlled robots were sent into the smouldering building on Thursday morning to locate and determine the temperature of the cylinders, using thermal imaging cameras, monitored on a CCTV system in a nearby van.

Fans of old-school Transformers may recall Inferno, a fire-fighting robot, that appeared in a 1985 episode of the cartoon series The Insecticon Syndrome. During the episode, Inferno sprayed fire-retardant foam on Ironhide, who had been electrocuted.
