India To Issue One Million Aadhaar Biometric IDs Per Day
India will issue unique IDs to citizens at the rate of one million per day starting in October of 2011. The intent is to provide Aadhaar IDs, biometric identification, to over 600 million adults in less than two years.
The first number was issued to Ranjana Sonawane, aged 40 years of West Maharashtra state.

India’s Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee made it a point to highlight this while presenting the federal government budget for 2011-12 in Parliament on February 28,2011.Mr. Mukherjee said the UIDAI (Unique Identification Development Authority of India), which gives the “Aadhaar” IDs, have issued over two million unique numbers so far in pilot projects in many parts of the country. “From October 1, 2011 one million numbers will be generated per day,” he said amidst thunderous applause in Parliament.
“The stage is now set for realizing the potential of Aadhaar for improving service delivery, accountability, and transparency in governance of various schemes,” he noted.
For myself, I tend to remember what Robert Heinlein said about universal identity card systems:
When a place gets crowded enough to require ID’s, social collapse is not far away. It is time to go elsewhere. The best thing about space travel is that it made it possible to go elsewhere.
