Google Engineers Not Sure What Google RankBrain AI Is Doing
In a troubling note for those who are concerned with the growth of artificially intelligent systems (like Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking), it appears that one of Google's main AI programs is no longer understood by the company's engineers.
According to Paul Haahr, one of the company’s top engineers working on the Google Search team said that Google’s new RankBrain AI engine is actually more complex than thought before, and even some of Google’s own staff is clueless how it is exactly working. Seems like Google’s RankBrain AI is a Skynet in making because even the engineers working on it are unable to understand it.
The statement was made by Haahr at SMX West, a search marketing conference that was scheduled in San Jose, California between March 1 and 3.
'Google understands how RankBrain works but not really what it is doing.'
Philip K. Dick fans might be thinking of the Vulcan 3 self-modifying computer in his 1960 novel Vulcan's Hammer
Very little of the computer was visible; its bulk disappeared into regions which he had never seen, which in fact no human had ever seen... Their only check on the growth and development of Vulcan 3 lay in two clues: the amount of rock thrown up to the surface, to be carted off, and the variety, amount, and nature of the raw materials and tools and parts which the computer requested.
The financial cost of supporting Vulcan 3 was immense... At the latest estimate, Vulcan 3's share of the the taxes came to about forty-three percent.
Beneath his feet the floor vibrated... What lay down there? Energy, tubes and pipes, wiring, transformers, self-contained machinery... He had a mental image of relentless activity... worn-out parts replaced, new parts invented; superior designs replaced obsolete designs. And how far had it spread? Miles?
