Imation Flash Wristband: Music And Medical Informatics Miracle

The Imation Flash Wristband site claims that their product "redefines wearable technology design by combining a portable flash drive that doubles as a wristband." Imation may need a good website copy editor, but there's no doubt that they are on to something with this cool item.

(Imation Flash Wristband)

The basic idea is that this product combines the usual elastic wristbands that everybody and their brother is selling in imitation of Lance Armstrong and his cancer cause, and a flash drive for your digital needs.

I can see myself putting up to 256 - 32 megabytes of music on this thing, and then plugging it into my car stereo or my computer to enjoy tunes. And sure, there are the usual file-sharing opportunities.

But, what if I am rushed unconscious into the ER? That's when the aforementioned 32 megabytes comes in handy. I'll upload my entire medical history onto this thing. Why waste time wearing a traditional jewelry-style MedicAlert bracelet that says two or three words, when I can just give them the whole megillah, x-rays, video of living will, and all? People are already used to seeing these wristbands in a medical context.

Medical informatics experts have been arguing for years over whether to put this information in a chip on a card, or use an ID number to pull it off a national database. People are already used to wearing those darn elastic wristbands - why not just use Flash Wristbands? Every ER in the country has access to a computer with a USB port - we're good to go.

Portable storage - sure, science fiction has it. Check out Larry Niven's dime disk , which neatly anticipates those nifty 'nickel-sized' Toshiba hard drives. More info on the Imation Flash Wristband product page.
