5G Will Be Crucial Backup For Self-Driving Cars

In his 2007 novel Halting State, science fiction writer Charles Stross describes how remote drivers can take over if autonomous driving features fail:

The steering wheel twitches hesitantly, then as the doors click shut it spins hard over and the yuppiemobile accelerates fast. You try not to shudder. You hate the whole idea that some bored drone pusher in a remote driving centre has got your life - and half a dozen other lives - in his hands. At least on the motorways the cars steer themselves, that's within the capabilities of today's AI.

An essential technology for this to become reality is almost in place:

Another key reason why 5G is crucial for autonomous cars is the inclusion of specific safety measures in the vehicle. For example, suppose a self-driving car fails to navigate due to a traffic jam caused by a road accident.

The autopilot feature might hand the reins over to the driver. However, it would not be possible in case of an elderly or a disabled rider. For this reason, many tech companies have been testing remote pilots, who are trained drivers sitting miles away in a simulator that can take over instantly. However, to achieve it, a stable and fast connection offered by 5G would be crucial.
