EtchASound - Picture Your Voice

EtchASound is like a hands-free Etch-A-Sketch on exhibit at the Cybersonica 06 Sonic Art Exhibition. The device was created by Seulki Kang & Kenichi Okada under the name atoyfactory.

(EtchASound fom atoyfactor)

Obviously, this device was inspired by the universally known Etch-A-Sketch, which allows the user to create a drawing by turning two knobs, thereby manipulating the direction that the line is going on the screen. The EtchASound lets the user create a line drawing syllable by syllable, and word by word.

As the user speaks, the software translates the sound into motion and direction; the computer creates a two-dimensional image in real time, one line segment at a time, just like an Etch-A-Sketch. The computer then converts this into a three-dimensional image that is viewable with red/cyan "3D" glasses. The user's input is accepted through four microphones; volume controls horizontal and vertical, pitch controls depth.

It seems to me that this idea could be readily adapted to use on computers; how come I can't just do this on a Mac or PC?
