The robot cab seemed to know where it was going and, no doubt, the master machine from which it received its signals knew. |

As far as I know, the first instance of the neologism "autocab" is not from Heinlein, but just a quick mention in a very short story from the preceding year. This is from The Link by Salem Lane in Amazing Stories of 1950.

For an interesting contrast, take a look at the robot cab driver from Philp K. Dick's A Present for Pat.
