"I am not a speed reader. I am a speed understander."
- Isaac Asimov

Dermal Spray
A color coating for the skin, applied as a jet of vapor.

Kneeling down, Parsons opened his instrument case. As quickly as possible he laid down his dermal sprays. Wade and the others watched for a few moments...

The door opened suddenly. A woman entered... At the sight of Parsons she stopped. "Oh," she gasped. Her dark eyes widened in astonishment... "Why is your skin chalk-colored?" she asked...

"In my times," he said with difficulty, "we were divided into white, yell, brown, black races..."

"Why are you opening those tubes?"

"He's spraying himself," Wade said. "Darker."

I don't know when people started using dermal sprays; I'm betting it was later than this book. Take a look at this video of modern-day spray tanning.
