"We're about 20 minutes away from the point where Clarke's law kicks in and technology becomes indistinguishable from magic."
- Peter Watts

Wire-Gun
Device that aids movement in microgravity.

"A handheld device which helps humans get around in zero-gravity environments like spacecraft hangars and space colony docks. The wire-gun launches a powerful magnet attached to a wire cable, which anchors the user in place and can be rewound to pull him to his destination. This device can also be used to establish a contact link for voice communication."
Technovelgy from Mobile Suit Gundam, by Yoshiyuki Tomino.

This fictional device continues the long line of original contributions made by writers to the ""getting around in zero gee" category. Compare the wire-gun to the electrical 'tether' from the 1898 story Edison's Conquest of Mars by Garrett P. Serviss and the broomstick from Arthur C. Clarke's 1952 novel Islands in the Sky.
