"...science fiction is sort of like a sociological genome. It's a huge range of possible futures, most of them useless; some vital. You never really know in advance."
- Peter Watts

Datapack
A compact device for carrying data.

I keep thinking about this problem: I have content (let's say MP3s), and I want to play it in different environments, and different devices. Unfortunately, at present, I am forced to purchase the PLAYER with the content.

In the pounding silence that followed, Pardot Kynes did not look exhilarated from his near brush with death. Instead, he appeared dejected. "We lost all that data." The Planetologist heaved a deep breath. "I could have used our readings to understand those storms better."

Liet reached inside a front pocket of his stillsuit and held up the old-style datapack he had snatched from the pod's instrument panel. "Even while watching out for our lives--I can still pay attention to research."

Kynes beamed with fatherly pride.

Under the desert sun, they hiked up the rugged path to the safety of the sietch.

Wouldn't it be better to just have something to plug into your car stereo, your friends' boombox, or their home unit. Some memory devices are, of course, available; the Sony memorystick, compact flash memory, and so forth.
