"We were essentially being shell-shocked by rapid change. That was one of the things you needed science-fiction writers for back in the Sixties, because we could cope with the future."
- Peter Watts

Tapeworm Tranquilizer
  Robotic suppository dispenses tranquilizer.

Officer Johnson walked over to the clothes cart and picked up a slender plastic tube about 20 centimeters long. She unscrewed one end and slid out a flexible yellow object.

"Now this may feel a little strange, honey, but it won't hurt a bit." With one hand the matron spread the girl's cheeks, and with the other she pressed the yellow object against the anus. The yellow object bulged, and began to ripple, and gradually began to work its way into the colon.

"This is what we call a Tapeworm Tranquilizer," explained the matron. "It works its way into the large intestine and attaches itself to the wall. It measures tranquilizer into your bloodstream to keep you calmed down. It measures two or three things in your blood so it knows whether to raise or lower the dose, and when it runs out, it lets go, and you just flush it down the toilet without ever knowing it's gone."

Here's a bit more detail on the device:

"When did we start using the worm?" asked Emiliano, knowing Menendez had recently given a course on the subject.

"In the early nineties" was the reply. "The idea was to have a naloxone dispenser for junkies, like the insulin dispenser for diabetics, to provide the dosage as the body needs it." Emiliano grunted assent and sat back to watch the girl dressing on the small monitor.

"The problem was to put the thing where the junkie couldn't get at it," said Menendez

Special thanks (and apologies) to Winchell Chung (aka @nyrath on Project Rho) for the tip on this article. Thanks also to Google Books for putting this online so I could take advantage of Winchell's 4 year-old tip!
