"SF looks towards an imaginary future, while fantasy, by and large, looks towards an imaginary past."
- Frederik Pohl

Feeding Room
  An automated child care.

With these words, M. Atout opened a door, and the visitors found themselves in the feeding room.

(Feeding Room)

It was an enormous gallery, furnished on two sides, with what looked like bottle racks, and in which babies were sitting side-by-side; in front of each there was a serial number, and the patented feeding bottle that took the place of its mother. A steam-driven pump, positioned at the far end of the room, ensure the supply of the supra-lacto-gout to the tubes that delivered the feed to the babies. Feeding began and ended at set times — a proceeding that encouraged the development of regular habits. All had to have the same appetite and the same stomach capacity and pain of going hungry or suffering indigestion. The same slogan that marked the doors of Republicans in 1793 could've been inscribed over the entrance here: equality, or death!
