Comments on Submersible Aircraft - DARPA's Flying Sub?
I really think that everyone who watched TV in the Sixties knows what they want; and what have those DARPA guys left out of their spec? (Read the complete story)

"I always liked the nifty way that the Flying Sub was launched from beneath the main viewing lounge.

"
(Bill Christensen 10/6/2008 9:14:58 PM)
"Flying subs have been suggested as early as in the 1930's ! Here's some mega-cool stuff:
WWII submersible airship ideas
This seems far-fetched, but one must remember that it's not far off the jet seaplanes of the 1950s."
(Yossi Preminger 10/7/2008 6:39:34 AM)
"Don't forget SkyDiver from the Gerry Anderson series "UFO"! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wos5e_WlYs"
(Chris Johnston 10/7/2008 1:07:11 PM)
"Right now, when thinking submersible aircraft, I'm thinking of the Sky/Sea-Wing of the Empire of the Rising Sun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEZqfAZiUCw"
(Sabre Runner 10/7/2008 1:23:04 PM)
"Sabre Runner - thanks, here's the trailer for Red Alert 3; note the 'Sea/Sky-Wing: Mobile flying unit that can attack from air. It can go underwater and act as a submarine, attacking from sea and becoming invisible to the radar.'
"
(Bill Christensen 10/8/2008 10:01:22 AM)
"Chris - I never watched UFO, but I like the video, showing the Skydiver launch.
"
(Bill Christensen 10/8/2008 10:03:33 AM)
"Yossi - great info and pictures about early efforts to do this kind of work. I hyperlinked your URL; the article mentions Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow but doesn't show an example. The picture below is one of the Amphibious Squadron.

When the planes go to amphibious mode, the propellers slide from the front of their nacelle to the back to push the plane through the water, like the propeller on the back of a boat. Slick idea."
(Bill Christensen 10/8/2008 10:06:30 AM)

"The problem is they would also need to change the direction of rotation."
(Sabre Runner 10/9/2008 7:22:40 AM)
"what kind propulsion system is gonna be used to fly underwater not regular jet engines they wont work and theres a reason y planes dont go under water cause going as fast as they are if the hit the water its all over"
( 5/27/2010 8:27:08 AM)
"ive only seen this in sky captian "
( 5/27/2010 8:29:39 AM)
"I should have thought of that one - when I get a chance, I'll get an appropriate screen capture."
(Bill Christensen 5/27/2010 12:11:38 PM)
"when can find submarine aircraft STARFISH"
(lenuta 8/29/2010 11:50:32 AM)
